Interesting.I always assumed the reason I saw light-skinned Black Americans on television was that there are no "pure" Blacks any more.
But surely there are dark skinned media people who can make a conscious effort to put darker skinned people on the screen? I expect that whites will have their own reason for not wanting to extol the beauty of ebony, but I think that there is no reason at all why we would do the same. Recently, there was a show on television about skin shades. I wasn't really following it, but I was appalled to see the editor of an Asian women's magazine reject an aspiring model because she was "too dark".
As a media person, this is something I have had to think about and bring in to debate. Yet, you may have seen some of the African productions- it is the girls who look like their light-skinned Black American idols that get the starring roles. I would love to change that. I know my effort is a drop in the ocean, but some others may be waiting to do the same thing.
