Ledj Iyasu was the son of Negus Mika'el and the grand son of Menelik 11. Negus Mika'el had been coverted to christianity for about 40 years, at the time when Ledj Iyasu was having contention about the throne with the nobles and those who were in the inner circle of the throne room. There have been a long religious wars in Ethiopia between Muslims and Chritians, and it has been long established, that only those people who are christians can sit on the throne and administer the administration in Ethiopia.
It was Menelik's wish for his grand son Ledj Iyasu to sit on the throne after his passing, but since he was advocating the Islamic ways of life, the inner circle had to despose of him from the throne, and give the throne to Queen Zawditu who was also the daughter of Menelik. When Ledj Iyasu realized that this taking place, he gathered those of his friends and advisors, and was making trouble all over the place. Christians and muslims were now fighting on different sides and about 500 people were killed on both sides. What was also sad, is that Negus Mika'el after knowing that Ledj Iyasu his own, son, was wrong in trying to change the custom of his people, and was making much trouble throughout the land of Ethiopia, also gathered an Army to fight on behalf of Ledj Iyasu, but off course both of them were finally defeated and Ledj Iyasu arrested in the end.
