Tafari Makonnen's mother's name was Wayzaro Yashimabet, but before Ras Makonnen met and married Yashimabet, he was married to Wayzaro Assallafatch, the daughter of Empress Taitu's sister.
Wayzaro Assallafatch was the mother of Yelma, who was Tafari older brother, and also the son of Ras Makonnen. After the death and burial of Ras Makonnen, there was a suggestion that Harar, for which Ras Makonnen was the Governor, should be given to Dejazmatch Tafari who was just over fourteen years of age at that time, so that was when Empress Taitu spoke up and said, that since Yelma was the oldest son of Ras Makonnen, it is in order, that the Governorship be given to Yelma the older son, and since Yelma was the son of the daughter of Empress Taitu's sister, Empress Taitu had all the right to take up for her relatives. There was some displeasure among Ras Makonnen's most loyal officers and Troops, who were ordered to stay in Addis Ababa, in order to prevent them making things harder for Yelma in Harar, if they got the opportunity to do so, in order to care for Dejazmatch Tafari as they were asked to do by Ras Makonnen their master. Eight days later, on the 9th of May 1906, the Emperor's proclamation was issued, giving Harar, the governorate of Ras Makonnen, to Yelma his oldest son, and Sillale, the Governorate of Ras Darge, was given to Dejazmatch Tafari. So of the people were satisfied with what was done, and some were dissatisfied, but the proclamation of the Emperor was the law of the land.
