Greetings Rosalind
I would like to read some testimony from actual people who knew and worked with Garvey. I would like to see statements that he defrauded/misappropriated the BSL.
Most of what I read are Babylon's accounts. Garvey was convicted because he(the UNIA) mailed a brochure to one of his members with a picture of a ship(S.S Phylis Wheatley) which he hadnt fully obtained but was in the process of obtaining at the time of his arrest. So they say he was selling stock of a ship that he didnot have.
It is not mystery that the gov't saw Garvey as a threat and wanted him deported. So they had to find something to pin on him to justify deportation.
It is just like when they cant get organized crime members on anything substancial, they try to get them on financial implications (tax evasion/embezzelment, etc). I am not comparing Garvey and the UNIA to organized crime. I am just trying to stress a point.
I think Garvey's downfall was trying to establish a black socio-economic nation within a white supremacist nation.
That is possibly why he saw capitalism as a viable option.
Peace
