this statement attributed to Yashua is much older than the bible, as also the psalms and proverbs of David...even the 10 commandments are extracts from the 42 negative confessions of Ma-at, in fact the whole entirety of the scriptures contained in the bible which bear fruit in waking reality are extractions , from the ancient kemetian mystery schools, and the kemetians honored those black faces older than themselves from the region of Meroe and Axum as well as the areas now known as the Sudan and further south, calling these " The Old Race ".
so regarding the origins is absolutly important before analyzing a particular subject or idea, IMO,

truth = freedom........again, imo
it is a truthful statement as far as truth may or can allow one to see their current situation in life from a more honest position, allowing the individual a clearer perspective from which to proceed out of bondage. socrates said,
"the unexamined life is not worth living"
though not the same as the phrase in question it implies that we must examine ourselves in truth or one is living a lie. imo, i don't think
it's a garantee that knowing the truth will immediately release an individual from bondage without significant changes from habitually doing the same things an individual formerly did while in bondage. imo, knowing what one is dealing with is more than half the battle won, yet the forces exerting containment may not release their grip just because one is aware of who is pressing them.
this may take a little proactivity to make them know to get up off the wood so to speak.
