Greetings to all,
Sense, you said at the end of the post i am responding to,
"And if saying I am white says anything BEYOND the color of my skin then I should no longer do that."
That is exactly the point. To a great many people who reason here 'whiteness' means a great deal more than just the tone of your skin (which in my case at least would be better described as a motely collection of light browns, whites, and pinks, depending on uv exposure..)
Whiteness can also mean an enitre system, worldview, set of historical realities. I have found in my personal experience here that your best bet is not to take what are often meant as general statements overly personally. If things get personal you will know :-)
And also, for what it is worth, when an (until now) fairly obscure african-american academic makes a fairly outrageous statement such as this, yes it is possible to get all offended. But in all seriousness, wasnt it just so much rhetoric. Does this gentleman have the means at his disposal to actually embark on such an ambitious scheme?
I dont think so.
And I for one have learnt not to get unduely worked up about empty threats.
love and life
