fact:
In 1682 Emporer Yohannes held a religous council were he established this rule and regulation:

"The Ferenji (foreigners) should leave the country and return to their homeland; only those foreigners who had accepted OUR faith and received the sacrament of Baptism could remain in Ethiopia or leave as they wished"

this decree fully makes clear that they refused to be made pawns of ANY other people's political or spiritual agenda. since all of the foreign catholics did not leave willingly from ethiopia, Yohannes forcefully expelled all Catholic missionaries.
