Re: Half-Truths
In Response To: Re: Ethiopian Christianity ()

"king Suseynos (1607-32) became Catholic in the hope of an advantageous military alliance with the West. Again this proves my point about the linkages between the Ethiopian monarchy and other Christian monarchs, in this case Portugal.
-----
this PROVES your point?!
Yes, Suseynos became catholic and swore allegiance to the roman church in 1626. he died in 1632. this period culminated in somewhat of a civil war in ethiopia. Susneyos own older brother, Afe kristos (mouth of Christ) refused to accept the religion of rome, and susneyos ordered that his tongue be cut off.
so the insinuation that the ethiopian monarchy sought to be linked to other christian monarchys, namely portugal and rome, is a bit misleading. there were ethiopians that fought tooth and nail and died in thousands in their quest to preserve the orthodox faith in their livity as well as how it related to the monarchy in ethiopia.
susneyos' ethiopia was divided in two. this resulted in him restablishing the orthodox faith as the official religion in ethiopia-thus a five year coversion by susneyos to catholicism does not really support your argument.
as soon as susneyos died in 1632-his son Fasilades took over the throne he ordered all Jesuits to leave Ethiopia.

"in many instances Ethiopian monarchs including Selassie did court the favour of these European kings to further their own endeavours"

please provide some facts to back up that statement. especially the MANY part
