BEIJING: ‘Donkra’, a rare female zebra and male donkey hybrid was born at 4:00 on Monday, at Xiamen Haicang zoo.
In Haicang zoo, the baby ‘donkra’ was only a meter tall, weighing approximately 30 kilograms. The offspring resembles both parents, size and eyes like a donkey while other features and distinctive stripes are that of a zebra.
According to staffs at the zoo, zebras, donkey, and sheep all roam freely in the park. Since May last year, they found that their only zebra naturally mated with a donkey. At first they did not take any notice, but February this year they confirmed the Zebra was pregnant.
There were complications during birth but with the veterinary's help the baby ‘donkra’ was born successfully.
"Strangers cannot stand close to 'donkra', including our breeders. We are feeding bran and brown sugar fluid to the zebra in order to ensure enough milk is produced for her baby," Lin Qiaoying, a staff at Haicang Zoo said.
Baby "donkra" and his mother have returned to the grassland area, and had their first meeting with visitors. Although the baby still has problem standing, it remains by his mother's side. According to staffs, the Zebra has been very aggressive in order to protect her child.
