this race is neither for the swift
In Response To: Re: Rasta use of the bible ()

nor for the strong but for those who can endure till the end.It is an undeniable fact that the bible was used "to pacify, mentally and physically subjugate Africans across the globe","it is out of context","full of contradictions" and encourages "suppression of female principle"

it is equally true that where there is oppression there is resistance and further that an understanding and interpretation of text is function of the interplay among the following variables the text, the voice (the reader) and the message(what is to be transmitted) hence the oppressor (also in the form of missionaries) created its own theology as propagated in the various forms ( state theology whose main aim is obey those in authority and liberal church theology with its emphasis on being born in sin and tthe need to repent and accept Jesus and go to Heaven).

However the oppressed have used the same bible to respond, mobilise and concientise for liberation hence the rise of LIBERATION ,FEMINIST AND BLACK/AFRICAN theologies. Rasta re emerges in the context of political oppression, economic exploitation, social degradation and cultural domination masked by christian religion.Rasta rises as a rebel but grows to be a Revolutionary. HE DOES NOT ADVOCATE A NIHILISTIC REJECTION OF BIBLE for most our people are still under its influence and spell. rasta uses it to sharpen , develop and inspire our people to engage in self realisation and struggle for self determination.

rasta lives in a concrete jungle and contrary about liberal individual approach of missionaries Rasta is concerned about the AFRICAN RACE first. Rasta can not risk pitfall and organisational pathologies of the past struggles such as liberalism, sectarianism, factionalism and tribalism. HENCE RASTA HAS TO START WHERE OUR PEOPLE ARE or risk being islolated!

the masses are key! self satisafaction is enough for REBELS; REVOLUTIONARIES ISOLATED FROM THE PEOPLE are like fish out of water!

the point is the BIBLE is a tool, weapon and instrument and cn be used for oppression as well as liberation and secondly the means and methods of communication and struggle vary according to sitiations we find ourselves in. there are situations where one has to act like preacher in the church but there times where one has to act as soldier and shoot to kill all for african liberation. Context is crucial!!! what price are you prepared to pay for african liberation?
