I just get the impression that there is a tendency among the African middle classes to distance themselves (and even be ashamed of) "traditional" religion and culture. One example that stands out to me is the President of Zambia insisting that Zambia is a "Christian country".
I know that the Christian missionaries did some good such as opening hospitals and opposing slavery etc, but I think they also did bad by making many Africans ashamed of their heritage.
