On another note. I've heard of "witchdoctors" in Zimbabwe that still know how to make lightening machines.
On yet another note. I don't think it should be an issue of symbolism vs. application... It is EWestern thought that makes us departmentalize and seperate spirituality from science...very un-African. The ancients would have seen equal value and no contention between it's function and symbolism. In fact both are intertwined as 360 pointed out earlier.
