I think if people really understood how much the market is manipulated to tank economies, pump up other ones and justify long term geo-political-economic goals, all with government assistance, the myth of the free market would quickly disappear. A look at the Reagan years that lead up to the collapse of the Soviet Union will show massive covert(government) manipulation of market to ensure the collapse. So any thought that Reagan stood for "free market" is out the window. The issue is who is benefitting from government intervention - if it is the power elite, it's ok and not discussed, if it is the people, well then it's socialism.
