Black Mother
In Response To: Re: Rasta and the Caribbean ()

This poem was published in a Caribbean literary publication circa 1970's I believe. I cannot recall the name of the publication (probably Caribbean Quarterly or Bim) or the author but I will do some research and find it out. So many of the same issues that we speak about daily on this board are dealt with here – colourism, the betrayal by the middle class, pandering to African issues etc

"Out of many, One people" are the national watchwords of Jamaica

Black Mother

Africa for Africans
At home and abroad.
Jamaica? Out of many one?
Fraud.
Out of one' Africa, many nation feed
That's how it seems to me.
Europe's piaca nations climbed her back,
Made slaves of the free.

But some would not see it so,
They say ‘ No, No-
We must have good race relations'
Race relations?
Does that mean trade with African nations,
Loving black brethren, pride in my race?
Or being extra nice so tourists
Won't notice the colour of my face?
"Such tame natives'

Jamaica is the nation
Which the Arawaks were given
And from which in Europe's greed.
Said Arawaks were driven.
Dem a de native.
The same men came to Africa
With gun and bribe in hand,
Kidnapped me from Black Mother
To work their captured land
Dem a squatter.

I booked no passage to come!
Paid no plane fare.
They bid me applaud when Jews shout Zion!
Yet what am I doing here?
I a captive.
Confused, with pointless affiliation they all sing
‘Exodus'
but when black man means it there's a middle class fuss-
they who disown black mother with "Out of many, One'
they are unrelated to I and I, black brother,
dem a orphan.
We all know how the West was one by samfie, skank, deceit and gun,
By raping Black Mother and disinheriting her children
alias "Africa" and "the New World"
according to European men.
That name itself seems to be a fraud
‘Ethiopia for Ethiopians at home and abroad!"
True Lord.
