Re: Rasta and the Caribbean
In Response To: Re: Rasta and the Caribbean ()

"Actually I didn't know that there was an indigenous population left in Trini at all."

Trinidad does not have 'pure' Amerindian settlements anymore that live in the manner that the original inhabitants did as there is in Guyana. There is however an active Carib community that works to preserve certain cultural practices and historical artifacts etc. They have an online presence and lobby the government for recognition and preservation of their history. While they have not received enough attention by any government, and the community is quite small, I would still say that there is still a presence in Trinidad, primarily in the Arima area. You can check out their website at http://www.kacike.org/srcc/

"Basically she is saying that the Indians who were brought to Guyana gradually got rid of the idea of caste amongst themselves, and transferred the idea of "low caste" onto Africans."

I have heard similar sentiments expressed by others. In Trinidad the Hindu ideology incorporated Africans in their idea of caste system, and at the lowest level, even below the very dark skinned Indians Sudras, but that did not mean that caste is not still practiced among the Indian community. The boundary between who they consider Brahmin, and lower-caste remained very, very strong and continues to this day. It is especially noticeable in economic viability, religion, marriage etc.

In Trinidad the dominant Hindu sect/ group both in terms of religion and political power is the Sanatan Dharma. While many other types of Hinduism did come to Trinidad during indentureship, it is the type that gained the most power. The Indian racism plays out there as well. Many of the festivals, practices of the other types of Hindus, often those of the lower castes are sidelined by the Indian communities- the Kali and Durga worship, the firewalkers etc.
