Re: Rasta and the Caribbean
In Response To: Re: Rasta and the Caribbean ()

Actually I didn't know that there was an indigenous population left in Trini at all.
Have you read this book by Kean Gibson (who I am slightly acquainted with) which caused a big stir in Guyana? I forget the name of it. Basically she is saying that the Indians who were brought to Guyana gradually got rid of the idea of caste amongst themselves, and transferred the idea of "low caste" onto Africans. Many Indians have reacted to this book with outrage calling it a racial attack on them. I'm not qualified to judge all the claims made in the book, and it does seem like Dr. Gibson is being a bit of an apologist for the PNC [the African-dominated party that was formerly in power thanks to elections where deceased people were notorious for voting, and voting several times at that](although she does criticize them as well) and I cannot agree with her suggestion that partitioning up Guyana between African and Indian could be a viable solution to the conflict between us. I do think the book makes interesting points though and it must have struck a nerve with the Hindu racists for them to be so against it. If you've read it I'd be interested to know what you think.
I do feel that racism cuts both ways in Guyana. There are quite an amount of Blacks and Indians who really do absolutely hate each other and believe the worst stereotypes about each other. But overall I would say Indian racism is more "ideological", more based on the idea that Africans are inferior, and African feelings against Indians more arise from a fear of domination by Indians and a proprietary sense that "we were here first, so it's our country". Then again there are stereotypes of all Indians being greedy, conniving, etc. But overall I think Indian racism tends to more ideologically based and more Indians really think Africans are inferior, than vice versa.
