Re: Virtue and "Manliness"
In Response To: Re: Virtue and "Manliness" ()

Greetings to you, Nkrumah.

*******You hear it in the reggae all the time that a virtuous woman is hard to find etc. coming from that Christian upbringing*******

Yes, but let us not single out a Xtian upbringing. Although Judeo-Xtianity is the foundation of Western (European) Civilization o which we have been indoctrinated via slavery and/or colonization, male supremacy is a staple in ALL areas of culture. I think there are 9 areas of human behavior. Search seshatasefekht and his explanation(s)/reason(s) from Neely Fuller, Jr.

*******The impact of a combination of Judeo-Christian Religion and European culture on the way woman is percieved and how virtue may be defined may have a lot to do with the notion that a "virtuous woman is hard to find". ******

Truth. However, let us also sight that your words are presented from a male supremacist perspective.

Take for example this statement:

*******"That’s why PEOPLE thousands of years ago might not have liked to think of females as virtuous." ) is also interesting.*******

What people? Obviously 'people' is used to denote men. One of the keys of supremacy is our unconscious usage of language to support the status quo. It is implanted deep into our psyches since birth of not only a male God but only one God which in essence kicks the Goddess off the throne and demotes her, both above and below. In the statement you presented, it is clearly from the superior male perspective whereas females are the objects. You wouldn't hear any women saying those things about a virtuous women. Neither would you hear about women "coveting thy neighbor's wife" unless...

But you get my point.

Now, it could be possible that the etymology of virtuous being defined as "manly" could mean 'adult' in contrast to 'juvenile'. But it takes a broader understanding of the context of language in that day. But I would not be surprised if the context was manly as in males.

Perhaps we both could do more looking into the etymology and report back, or someone else may enlighten us. I'm curious now.
