Re: Virtue and "Manliness"
In Response To: Virtue and "Manliness" ()

Greetings of ma'at,
I forgot to post the source of these comments for they are not mine. Here is the source: http://podictionary.com/virtue-podictionary-1068/

I mentioned in my first post what led me to pursue the etymology of the word. I find it interesting that the two would be associated. I do not have a clear cut idea of what is manliness or womanliness because I think these cut through a wide spectrum and varies culturally. Cultures, particularly in the case of men end up defining what manliness is based on what they perceive as needed in the society. I think the idea of the virtuous woman and what makes a woman virtuous too comes within a cultural context.
The last comment there("So virtue actually means “manliness” and gets it sense of strength from that manly sense. "That’s why people thousands of years ago might not have liked to think of females as virtuous." ) is also interesting. You hear it in the reggae all the time that a virtuous woman is hard to find etc. coming from that Christian upbringing. Like Tarus Riley here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YCqoSlpOcw )

and Warrior King here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pERf1XIOZrQ

The impact of a combination of Judeo-Christian Religion and European culture on the way woman is percieved and how virtue may be defined may have a lot to do with the notion that a "virtuous woman is hard to find".
