i think that Christianity covered up a lot of the older traditions, basically it painted "paganism" with a new brush and demonized the older traditions while maintaining some of the forms.

there is much proof that the story of Jesus is really just a newer version of the same old story of the resurrected son of god of the Nile Valley.

i don't think whites in Africa dabbling in African religion is anything more than whites engaging in the "exotic" nature of their alien surroundings - and I'm sure there are more than a few Africans who are willing to let these whites in on some of the traditions.

in America I see alot of my fellow white people thirtsy for some kind of spiritual "awakening" - there are more than a few indigenous folks who are willing to let them in on some of the ceremonies and "wisdom" for some $. the market for this stuff is a pretty lucrative one amongst the rich white liberal types.

* that is an interesting point. i think the same can be said of Christianity, being related to the older traditions of the Nile Valley. i think aleister crowley went to the caribbean to study Vodoun to add to his gamut of occult learnings, i think it had more to do with stealing and co-opting ideas though, as is the tradition of most European interactions with the non-white world.
