Paul (livelyup) has been on this board as long as I have (three years plus) and honestly I've never had the sense that he is coming to study us like guinea pigs or anything like that. But that's just a matter of perspective and opinion I guess.
As a Black man or a brown man or a mixed man or whatever anyone might like to define me as... I identify just that little more with Black people than with anyone else, because Black people are my people and we are suffering to hell all around the world. However that does not mean that I will, could, or should close my eyes to other peoples' suffering. Native Americans for example have suffered like we have, not always in exactly the same way, but to a similar extent. If my country Guyana could be said to "belong" to anyone, it belongs to the Amerindians who have lived there for thousands of years, the rest of us have been there a few generations, our roots are in Africa, India, China, Madeira or various combinations of the above. If in the context of my country, there was an African-controlled government (as there has been) which was giving short thrift to the Amerindian people (as happened) then the fact of my being of African ancestry does not mean that I would not support the Amerindian people against that government. Justice is justice.
I don't know if you've said this directly (haven't read all the posts in this thread) but I get the sense that perhaps the reason you might think white people who support Black issues to EXCLUSIVELY support Black issues, is because of the historical and present-day relationship between Black and white people, i.e., that they have collectively profited off our misery and hence owe us a particular redress. That's true but they've collectively profited from the misery of (for eg.) Native Americans and Australian Aboriginals as well. Being that Paul is in Australia, to me it would make the most sense if he were to concentrate his time and resources on seeing how he could be of help to the Aboriginal people who are suffering under his ultra-racist government (assuming that they would want his help, which they very well might not). Basically in the struggle for justice, no matter your race or location, get in where you fit in, start close to home (cos oppression is everywhere and you know the conditions of your home and how to deal with them better than you do the conditions on the other side of the world) and follow your conscience.
The white folks I mentioned as being real allies (Linda Evans and Alan Berkman) were imprisoned for many years for their alleged involvement in supporting the militant Black struggle, particularly the underground group the Black Liberation Army, and specifically in connection with helping to break Assata Shakur (then Jo-Ann Chesimard) out of prison. Why they felt compelled to engage in such activities, you would have to ask them, but I would guess it was because they recognized their position of white privilege, realized that it was an illegitimate privilege based on bloodshed and exploitation, and decided to help correct the balance by doing what they could to assist (not direct, lead or influence) the militant wing of the Black liberation movement which was under intense state repression at the time. Whether you want to call them "pro-Black" or not is up to you and your definition of that phrase. I do think that they showed themselves to be honorable human beings. At the same time their treatment by the state shows that even militant revolutionary whites will be given more of a chance than militant revolutionary Blacks, because they were released from prison at the end of their sentences. Black militants tend not to be given sentences that have ends (unless it's the lethal injection chamber) and when they are sometimes they are illegally held past their maximum sentence as happened to ex-Black Panther and rastaman Veronza Bowers in Terre Haute prison, Indiana.
dead prez says on the liner notes to one of their albums "all you wannabe down white people need to demand reparations from your government for the stolen land, resources and labor of the Black Brown and Red peoples", I agree with this all-encompassing approach to justice. I stand with African people first but I will stand in solidarity with all downpressed peoples. Just like I would expect someone in the American Indian Movement to stand with their people first, but to stand in solidarity with the Black struggle as well. That's the kind of network that Fred Hampton was trying to create with his original, revolutionary concept of a "rainbow coalition" prior to the hijacking of that concept by reformers like Jesse Jackson. No one who knows anything about the warrior prophet martyr named Fred Hampton could deny that the man was the very definition of "pro Black". But he did not see any contradiction between that and standing in solidarity with the struggles of other downpressed groups, and trying to forge a united front with them.
Put it another way: being "pro Black" should not mean that I ignore, whitewash or try to justify how the buffalo soldiers killed indigenous people on behalf of the U.S. government. Being Native American and "pro-Native" should not mean that someone ignores, whitewashes or justifies how Native Americans were sometimes employed by white people to catch escaped slaves. Get the point?
