ABSOLUTELY!
You and I have the commonality of having the same British colonial education in which we were taught/conditioned that the British empire reigned supreme. Geography-a world map carved up into British Empire "acquisitions" with its artificial constructs of borders. Remember that world map in the front of the Atlas, all British pink.
Yes, Sudan, a huge "country" has its "borders" into the heart of Africa. These artificial restrictions, now have stopped migrations beyond which were once tribal delineations. It is quite shocking to look and see clearly beyond these artificial delineations of colonial construct (English, French whomeva).
A PASSPORT is now required, go figure.
I noticed looking at the AfricanAncestory site, three of the testimonials said they had Balanta heritage.
Really this is a huge bugbear for me as well..being taught how whitefella was the "first" to discover this and to map that when in actual fact Indigenous Peoples had been travelling from the far west of Australia to the centre for thousands of years to get ochre.
"Bantu" is supposedly a language grouping anyway is it not? We all know even today how organic the development of language is. I suppose really that it is only in South Africa where there are obvious physical distinctions between the Koisan and the "Bantu" that it has some relevancy.
"Africa" is a very diverse CONTINENT and we NOW know that People have moved in and out of Africa/Ethiopia since the very beginning.
The desertification of northern Africa has pre-empted continual migration south and west east and NORTH into europe from 7000 years onwards.
Wars in the Sudan..more movements -the People are here as refugees now and with elections in Southern Sudan, the Aust. government is setting up polling booths so they can vote. I have a chat to them whenever I can, on the bus, the taxi driver, etc, you know I am a bit of a stickybeak :). All Aficans, sans Koisan, speak in the same lilting rhythmical musical way which is in Jamaican patois and probably Trinnis, African Americans....
Let's no forget what, THEY, the euros did to Arabia after WW1 when they carved it up amongst themselves in 1920's. Their oil grabbings deliberatly left the Kurds out of the loop..the said Kurds because of artificial borders are homeless.
Mind you I am only writing from a largely observational viewpoint not an academic one....
and I am aware that I may be "preaching to the choir"...
as always Judah
