Toyota has to own its fair share of the blame. The President/CEO himself said his company took its focus off Quality as a primary motivation; and I imagine with a lot of help from the U.S., they shifted to Quantity and the money they could and did make from the interest payments on those billions of new cars. Toyota began as an auto maker not a Finance company.
Quite frankly they went against their own culture and adopted a Semitic/American business model based entirely on greed, now they must face its consequences.
