The interconnectedness of the global economy will become more apparent with more natural disasters like this effecting supply and demand chains. It will also bring to light the folly of following a global economic model whereby countries producing for export will be disproportionally hit since their model of "development" destroyed the ability of local economies to produce for themselves.

My state used to produce more than 90% of what it consumed locally 100 years ago and now produces about 5%. If the trucks every stopped running, this "agricultural" state would soon learn the idiocy of following the established economic model.
