Re: Girl thrown out of school over dreadlocks

I think that it is important that the issue of the girl being denied entry because of her dreadlocks be taken in the context of the fundamental social oppression that is leveled at Africans. Many schools especially religious (Christian/Hindu) in Trinidad and Tobago, do not accept children with either dreadlocks or cane rows. They prefer the female children to striaghten their hair to become 'acceptable'.

The mother of Kalifa Logan seems intent on seeking justice, which is good, as that is a situation that happens on many occasion, and because the persons do not stand up for their rights, the whole notion that it is ok to subject persons to such blantant infringement of the fundamental rights goes uncorrected.

Furthermore, most important is the effect this situation is having on the girl, as her mother says that she is distraught. From being bombarded with many stereotypes, and bogus ideas, whatever happens the girl will have internalized some notions of inferiority. The quagmire of ignorance that is perpetuated by these biblical/Christianized institutions need to be challenged. In doing so, the silence of many more 'Kalifas' will be broken.
