The Maroons have been conquered by modern Jamaica and tourism. The settlement at Accompong was under assault by squatters for many years, especially after independence in 1962. The heriditary rights of the Maroon people were ignored by government, which was most unsympathetic to Maroon claims of autonomy. The Maroon community was slowly worn down by the masses of Jamaica, who, piece by piece, thief away Maroon lands. Maroons resisted, but were physically and politically overwhelmed. Many Maroons emigrated, and Jamaicans from all over the island have moved in to Accompong and the surronding Maroon areas. Many of these squatters now call themselves Maroons, but they are not.
Tourism also has turned Accompong into a theme park like Disneyland. The few remaining true Maroons have had to surrender to forces beyond their control, and accept the inevitable. The strong and the pure are always outnumbered by ignorant parasite trash, who resent and fear those who have acheived great things. The common throng cannot match the achievements, so they destroy or thief whatever they can. Maroon is history now. Most have left, and only an empty shell, a tourist attraction, remains.
