The Rastafarian movement, which began in Jamaica in the 1930s, has been a significant influence on many of the young people in the community over the last two or three generations, having an effect on dress, hair, food and language.

It has also been partly responsible for the increase in pride in an African heritage.

Over the years, schools, youth and community organisations have increasingly shown interest in the art, music, dance and food of the Caribbean and Africa.

Individuals, and groups such as Akoma have done much to educate citizens of Gloucester in the culture and traditions of the African-Caribbean community.
