Re: Why I Am Letting My Natural Hair Grow Out

I am not at all disturbed about people debating the use of the word ‘negroid’. What does amuse and interest me is the wilful ignoring of the issue raised originally. Who is offended by the word is free to feel so and also free to debate it. However in my opinion I thought it was more appropriate to raise the issue where it can be given its due attention on its own thread so issues are not confused. I have made this suggestion before. The issue Kelani raised has just as much right to be debated on its own merit as does the issue of the terminology used to describe a particular African phenotype. That is simply my OPINION of how things could be done.

As for her being defensive and refusing to change her terminology, that is also her right and I find it quite arrogant for ones here to assume that they speak on behalf of all African people when stating that the term is offensive. Many do not feel offended at all and many recognize deeper issues that lurk beneath the hue and cry by some over the use of the word negroid. One thing I do agree with is that this issue is not at all simple. This is another reason why it can be lost in a thread that is not devoted solely to its discussion.
