We Are Mostly Empty Space

By Victor Alejandro Safie

Atoms are the building blocks of the material world or what scientists like to call "matter". Every single object is composed of atoms. The human body has 1027 atoms (10 followed by 27 zeros). There are many different types of atoms. In fact, there are over 90. These different types are called elements. Examples of some elements are hydrogen, oxygen, iron, copper, and helium. 99% of your body is made up from 3 elements: hydrogen, oxygen and carbon.

An individual atom is very small. The diameter of an atom ranges from about 0.1 to 0.5 nanometer (one billionth of a meter). Although very small, atoms are composed of even smaller particles. In the center of the atom is a structure called nucleus. The nucleus is a congregation of particles, these particles are called protons and neutrons and swirling around the nucleus are the electrons. There are even smaller particles moving around in atoms. These super-small particles can be found inside the protons and neutrons. They are called nucleons and quarks. These particles are made up of energy waves.

To build stuff different types of atoms bond and form a compound. An example of a compound is water, which is a group of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.

Atoms join to form molecules, when molecules are arranged in a particular manner we see matter. Atoms bond by sharing electrons. When an atom is ionized it gains or losses an electron. The loss of electrons converts an atom into a positively charged ion, while the gain of electrons converts an atom into a negatively charged ion. This results in one atom being positively charged and the other negatively charged resulting in attraction between the two.

And the most amazing thing is that atoms are 99.9% empty space. Almost all of the mass in an atom is made up from the protons and neutrons in the nucleus, with a very small contribution from the orbiting electrons. Sorry about the 6th grade chemistry flashback, but it was necessary to make my point. We were taught this, we memorize it, but we never thought about what it really means. What do the above paragraphs mean to you; think about it for a moment....

What it means to me is that we are creating our own reality and that the solidity of things is just an illusion created by the mind with the complicity of atoms. I say this because everything is made up of atoms that are 99.9% empty and the stuff that makes up atoms is energy. Matter only appears solid because of the electrical charges of the atoms that repel one another. Your mind through your thoughts is creating everything. How? Your thoughts can be measured as electrical signals, this electrical signals travel through the ether and affects the atoms.

Thoughts change the electrical charge of the atoms so they can bond and form molecules which bind to form matter, and this is how we create the world we perceive. This is a process that goes on in the subconscious mind. If you doubt this, think of when have you consciously thought about creating blood cells, and yet one hundred million red blood cells and seven million white blood cells are born in your bone marrow every minute. Who does this? Certainly not your conscious self. The subconscious mind is connected with the one energy that is everything. It's the same entity interacting with herself to create the experience of individuality.

Max Planck, the Nobel Prize winner in physics said: "As a man who has devoted his whole life to the most clear headed science, to the study of matter, I can tell you as a result of my research about atoms this much: There is no matter as such. All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter." Be in constant expansion.
