Our confusion will persist provided that we insist on regarding sodomy; male/male or female/female as an inherently effeminate act. Nothing could be further from the truth.
This act in in fact associated with asserting ones dominance over another. When species within the lower animal kingdom are observed engaging in this behavior, it is because one participant is intent on subjugating the other more submissive one. It may be argued that chemical imbalances caused by external factors in nature, may be responsible for triggering this behavior as a mechanism for self-preservation.
Transferred over to humans, what we see here is that this act involves one participant who again wishes to assert dominance over the other. It is associated wholly with Europeans and their culture and ideology, although unknowingly adopted by other cultures as they assimilated with Europeans.
The mass media has done a thorough job in portraying these acts as somehow 'sensual' (especially in the case of female/female coupling). It stands to reason that this would be the case, considering that the mass media is wholly and completely influenced by European thought.
