I do not know how much leeway Selassie I had in trying to secure the independence of Ethiopia . .. I tend to think that if he were more of a Garvey type of leader, he may of been wiped away very quickly, so his coddling to European interests might of been necessary to maintain his survival and that of Ethiopia.

It is hard to say . .. I do know that Abyssinian leaders in the past did know how to play different powers off of one another in order to maintain their country, I have a feeling Selassie was following the strategy set down by his forebearers.
