In this day and age, as in all, we have to be extremely careful in our interpretation of what is being presented us by the mainstream media. There's overwhelming racism, sexism, and classism in the media, and it comes through all over the place.
The important thing to me, though, is not just being critical of the media, but making our own. Participating in independent media which have no obligation to corporate influence is a way to reclaim this source of power. For instance, in January, two of my friends, for about $25 built an 8 watt transmitter. When placed on the top of the house, they can broadcast for several miles in each direction. Pirate radio, indy print media, and the internet are all amazingly easy to get involved with.
