Help me overstand the "evil" of Khadafi

The man was elected president of the African Union.
The African Union has the approval of the European/American overseers...and this was years AFTER this Lockerie bombing (1988). In fact, Libya and the families aboard the jet agreed to a financial settlement. So why is this being brought up again?
Why did the West approve of Khadafi's presidency?
Why did the other African nations elect him?
So when and why all of a sudden is he considered an evil despot who doesn’t have the right to put down his country’s rebellion? Has he used military tactics that are outlawed by the Geneva Convention? Did he gas anyone like Mussolini gassed the Ethiopians or Saddam with the Kurds?
Firstly, the rebels are just that, REBELS. Secondly, they are putting forth an armed rebellion. Kind of reminds me of the American Civil War.
What it DOESN'T remind me of is Tiananmen Square where there was not an armed resistance and where THOUSANDS of unarmed civilians were mowed down in the back by automatic gunfire from government troops. What were the UN sanctions against China? Where was the no-fly zone?
I ask for ones' opinions and kindly request that the usual links to other people's views can be avoided except in support of your own words.
I can read articles just as well as you can. But 2-way discussions/reasonings help me develop better overstanding, if you don't mind.
