The year was 1832, black people were tired of being enslaved and brutalized by Europeans on the slave plantations in the Island of Jamaica. So Brother Sam Sharpe and his people decided that it was time to put a stoppage to this slave trading business. Those brothers and sisters who could read noticed that there were slave uprisings everywhere including Barbadoes, Trindad, Antigua, as well as the Nat Turner uprising in Virginia USA, which moved from plantation to plantation freeing slaves and shouting aloud for the
abolition of slavery. So, Sam Sharpe and his people get themselves together and organized the biggest slave uprising in the history of Jamaica, involving over 20,000 slaves, and set slaves free in Trelawny, St. James, Westmoreland, Honover, and St. Elizabeth for a period of two weeks.

Sam Sharpe and his people had decided that there was no good reason for the slave masters to be ruling over them and working them without paying them, so this foolishness must stop and it can only be stop by them the people. Sam Sharpe was a preacher so he was allowed to move around the place freely, but when the slave masters think that he was preaching about their God, Sam Sharpe was teaching uprising against slavery, and when the slave master heard the loud amen from the slaves it was not amen for slavery, but it was amen against slavery.
The plan was simple, they used the 3 day christmas break to do a lot of dancing and celebration as if all was well with them, but they all decided that they would not be going back to work and if it comes to a fight, they were going to fight for their rights and teach the slave master a lesson of justice and liberation for their people. When they should have returned to work according to the slave masters plans, the slaves started to burn the trash houses and then the fire and drum signals started to go off, and the slaves were now moving from plantation to plantation and burning to the ground the homes of the most wicked slave masters, and freeing all the slaves which they came across. And before the night was over there were more than 20,000 slaves who were involved in this revolution.It is a very long story but in the end the slave master were taken by surprise and just did not know what to for two weeks, even their Maroon friends were bnot able to help them for two weeks.
