"Apartheid was a crime, but you couldn't blame apartheid on decisions made in Washington"
Question: CS: Is Zionism today morally equivalent to racism?
Chomsky: No, it's not morally equivalent to racism. Zionism covers lots of different things. The positions I hold now were at one time called Zionist. Were they racist? Well, there was an element of racism in them.
Question: Do you believe Israel should exist, why and in what form?
Chomsky: As a Zionist youth leader in the 1940s, I was among those who called for a binational state in Mandatory Palestine. When a Jewish state was declared, I felt that it should have the rights of other states - no more, no less.
