Re: 'Colorism' is Alive and Well

In Response To: Re: 'Colorism' is Alive and Well (gman)

I do not mean to insult anyone who is of mixed race heritage, but it seems to me that many biracial people do not like to claim their Afrikan heritage. Tiger Woods told NBC that he is "Asian" and Mariah Carey says, "I'm not Black. My father is. I'm just me."
Of course, there are also brothers like Barack Obama. I saw him on CNN and the reporter who was interviewing him tried her BEST to get him to say he was "mixed" or "white", but he kept saying that he is Afrikan American and wouldn't label himself any other way.
There is colourism--and then there is something else. I have noticed that many Afrikan people start making "excuses" for themselves by claiming to be various percentages of other races. I guess this somehow makes them feel better about themselves since they hate being Afrikan. I met a woman who looked like any Afrikan person in the US, the Caribbean...she could have been Rwandan or any ethnicity of Black. She told me "I'm one eighth Cherokee, one sixteenth French, and Puerto Rican". Not once did she acknowledge her natty hair and very dark skin. It made me angry.
What's wrong with being Afrikan?? We do not need the blood of another people to validate us. Isn't it a good thing to have dark, beautiful skin that stays supple well into our late years? Isn't it good that the Netcher made us in such a way that our skins turn amazing colors when kissed by the sun? What's wrong with our hair? Shouldn't we thank the Netcher for His/Her Wisdom in crafting our hair in such a way as to protect our brilliant Afrikan brains from the heat? It is very sad for these kinds of people who are lost and hate themselves. People ask me all the time what I am. I have been mistaken for Phillipino so many times and Afrikan people are actually DISAPPOINTED when I say, "No, I'm Afrikan". They want to hear something exotic, I suppose. Sad.
