Read the Kebra Naghast, it tells the story of the Ark.

Mennelik did not steal the Ark, the Book reveals that God allowed him to take it. When Solomon went in pursuit he was reminded that the Ark had gone not to a stranger, but to his own son. Solomon had married thousands of women in a bid to spread the Davidic genes around the world, and God was reminding him that He had chosen Ethiopia over all the other nations. The Angel then tells Solomon that God Himself would sit on the throne, and He would receive honour from men. I beleive this points to Haile Selassie.
