I definitely disagree with some in this thread who think that producing mixed children is gross, unnatural, wrong, or evil. I also think that it is perfectly fine for a black person and a white person to date or get married, if they are truly in love, just like any other couple. (Please read the rest of my post, before getting defensive.)
As for blacks not wanting to hook up with the ancestors of their oppressors, I have mixed feelings. I'm from the US, so it's a little bit different, I guess, since so many different waves of people have migrated there. I have never owned slaves; my ancestors never owned slaves. Even if my ancestors had owned slaves, I CERTAINLY don't condone it. It was a much smaller number of rich planters who owned slaves. (Do we still blame the entire country of Germany for Hitler? All Muslims for Bin Laden? All Americans for George Bush?) There were some wicked men in Europe who started up the slave trade. There were some wicked men in Africa who profited from supplying the trade with slaves. And there were some wicked men in the US and Caribbean who owned slaves. I realize that whites, regardless of the country they were moving from, have had an easier time blending in over the years. And this original white power has transferred to the whole 'white' population, which is the majority. This is not fair, it's not cool, and it's wrong. Anyhow, I'm rambling a bit, but like I said, as an American, where there are so many people from all over, it's not obvious who were slave owners in the past - but it is obvious whose ancestors were the slaves. In Jamaica, on the other hand, where it is a black majority, it is obvious that the few whites that do remain were most likely of plantation owner decent. So what I'm trying to say is that I can see the point a Jamaican might make when saying they wouldn't want to 'jump in bed' with their oppressors.
I am a white woman from the US who lived in Jamaica for awhile to do volunteer work. I assumed that since Jamaica was mostly all black, they would be a very united people. But there is more racial tension between the different ‘shades’ in Jamaica than between blacks and whites in the US. And I was shocked at how many men were attracted to me simply because I was white. I was very offended because I knew these men didn’t ‘love’ me as the professed. They certainly didn’t know a thing about me, besides that I was white. I think that this type of mentality is horrible and self destructive. (If, though, I met a black man who truly loved me for me, I don’t see a problem with it.)
So while I don’t agree that dating or mating out of one’s race is wrong, I do agree with the earlier posts that said in order for blacks to unite and rise, they shouldn’t be bringing more white mates into the picture. So I guess it just depends what an individual person’s priority is – romantic love, individual happiness and choice, and peace between races - or - social/political black revolution. Hopefully, someday, we can have both.
