This is my last post on this subject. It is not my intention to defend Whoopi Goldberg, I am simply responding to your questions.
According to Whoopi her original intent was to go by the name of “Whoopi Cushion” because she had a reputation for flatulence. It was on the advice of her mother who believed that no one would take her seriously as an actress that she decided on Goldberg, because it sounded good with “Whoopi” Sorry, no political statement intended.
Regarding, the Ted Dansen episode I have read and heard several reports of the same incident, but who did it offend? The "Black Bourgeois" class.
They were the ones complaining the loudest. The same ones thought the movie “The Color Purple” was more negative Hollywood “Black” male propaganda. I even heard Spike Lee, producer and director of “She’s Gotta have it,” weighing in on the subject. No one considered his portrayal of a sexually promiscuous “Black” woman a negative stereotype. In this man's world his endeavor was worth illustrious praise. The working class African-Americans, who comprise the majority in this country could care less about "Black" faces on "White" men.
One can ever accuse Whoopi of being timid. She has always been a most brazen comedienne, and has never shied away from a few ruffled feathers. Her comedy is not for the timid or self-conscious. It was her brazen comedy at a fundraiser for the DNC at Radio City Music Hall that has currently placed her in the crosshairs of the country’s conservative elite.
