Whoopi Goldberg made herself famous as a character in her one woman show featuring a collection of character monologues. A format that was soon to be copied by many artists both Black and White. Hollywood only calls on African artists after they have become a proven money maker. There is no "Black" star-maker in Hollywood. Celie didn't make Whoopi, Whoopi made Celie.
As for her African liberation duties does being a tireless activist for causes such as the homeless crisis in America, (Comic Relief) AIDS (Project Angel Food) and substance abuse count? She was the lone black face of Comic Relief, a fundraiser for a condition that disproportionately affects African-Americans. She was presented with the Angel Award for her efforts with Project Angel Food. An organization that provides food and personal services for victims of AIDS and HIV in Los Angeles, another condition that affects African-Americans in disproportionate numbers. Who else would fight for the rights of those who have fallen victims to substance abuse but a former drug addict?
She has been black-listed along with Danny Glover, Harry Belefonte, and Spike Lee for her outspoken political views, especially on the invasion of Iraq, and has been labeled anti-American.
Those are just a few of the projects she has lent her fame, money and time to. I doubt that's the resume of your "house nigress."
