Obelisk of Luxor (Paris)

In the center of the Place de la Concorde, stands the Obelisk of Luxor, wich was given by the viceroy of Egypt, Muhammad Ali, to France in 1829. The obelisk is 22,83 m high, has a weight of 230 tons and is made of pink granite. Before its present position it marked the entrance to the Amon temple at Luxor, and is decorated with hieroglyphics exalting the reign of the pharao Ramesses II.

So that future generations would be reminded of the effort it required to install the oblisk here in 1836, the procedure, including the mechanical devices that were used, are portrayed on the pedestal.

The Place de la Concorde, was for a periode called the Place de la Révolution and held in its center the guillotine that was used to behead the royal family during the french revolution.

Cleopatra's needles (London and New York)

The obelisks dates from 1468 BC and originally stood in Heliopolis, together called Cleopatra's needles. In 10 BC the emperor Augustus had them transported to Alexandria and erected before the temple of Julius Caesar, the Caesarium.
The Obelisks were constructed for Tuthmose III and are carved with hieroglyphics praising Tuthmose and commemorating his third sed festival. Later inscriptions were added by Ramesses II to commemorate his victories.
The name Cleopatra's Needles is a romantic invention, as the obelisks are not connected to her at all.

London

The London obelisk was a gift from the Viceroy of Egypt, Muhammad Ali, to the British people in 1819 in recognition of Nelson's victory over the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile in 1798 but it took until 1879 before the monument was erected at its present location on the Victoria Embankment right by the Thames River.
The obelisk is 21 m high, has a weight of 187 ton and is made of red granite.

New York

The New York City obelisk was presented as a gift to America in 1869 by Muhammad Ali after the opening of the Suez canal, in the hope of stimulating economic investment in his country. In mid 1880 the onelisk arrived in New York and it took until january 1881 to move it to its present location inside Central Park.
The obelisk is 21 m high, has a weight of 193 ton and is made of red granite.

AXUM OBELISK

1,700 years old
Weighs 160 tons
24m tall
Looted in 1937
Return costing $7.7m

The ornately decorated 24-metre (78ft) obelisk is regarded as an outstanding example of architecture from the ancient city of Axum, itself seen as one of the four great kingdoms of the ancient world.

It stood for years outside the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation in Rome, despite an Italian commitment to send it back to Ethiopia.
