polytheistic might not be the proper word to use; I think Substance monotheism or Henotheism. One Creator many other gods or spirits acting the will or certain aspect of the Creator. In other words lets say X represent the Creator and T represents X's anger and warth while U represents X's love and compassion. T and U were seen as independent gods worshipped in their own rite and also as being expressions of X. In time we understood that T and U are not independent but truly are X. XT XU XTU. I hope this can explain.
