Greetings
"In the Temple of Esneh in Egypt, there is a great sky-painting in the portico on the ceiling which shows the whole picture of the zodiac with all its constellations . Between the figures of Virgo, The Virgin, and Leo, The Lion, there is carved the figure of the sphinx with the head of a woman and the body of a lion. The woman’s face is looking at Leo and the lion’s tail is pointing at Virgo, leading to the assumption that we begin with the virgin and end with Leo."
~ taken from , "The Alpha and the Omega"
From Virgo to Leo completes the cycles of mankind. Metaphysically speaking, in my opinion, it represents the 'mystery' of the higher and lower mind and their relationship with each other...yang/yin...alpha/omega..Ausar/Auset..
So you are looking at a representation of the Divine Mother (Medusa) when you look at the head of the sphinx.
Many believe that the sphinx was made in honor of a pharoah. I think that it is much older that what babylon scientists have determined. At least 10, 000 year old.
Peace
PS: Symbolically, I sight Medusa as the original Rastawombman. Her locks were depicted as snakes.. to invoke dread/fear...and to represent wisdom.
Contrary to the western portrayal of snakes/serpents as evil, ancient eastern traditions view serpents as symbols of wisdom.
