From one 'educated' to another, I disagree with your conclusion that it is incorrect for Eja to speak of being 'reminded' of slavery and other oppressive acts for which he was not around to be an eyewitness. Groups share collective memories through literature/legends/etc., in which case, it is possible for one to 'remember' acts that they did not directly witness. i.e. I remember what happened to my great-grandfather when he ate the berry from that tree (because my grandfather told me).
