Re: My Letter to the Editor in response to the art

Greetings Marsha
Welcome to the forum.

I want to address a part of what you wrote.

"As an advocate for diversity and inclusion, I do not condone segregation, separation or isolation. I support the diversity of a student body with the demographics of the teachers, faculty and staff reflecting those they serve. It is essential that students see leaders who look like them, but also that they have access to other leaders who may contribute a different view, culture or style that may broaden their horizons and enrich their learning experience. These are key components needed to reach our goal of having the aforementioned ideal environment where all children are more apt to learn and all teachers are more successful with teaching."

I do agree that our children need to be exposed to other cultures and people on the face of this earth. But I do not think it should be at the expense of losing their identity/culture in the process. I do think that black children needs to know themselves/culture/history first and foremost before they are immersed in other cultures.

I am an early childhood educator and I see how many white females teachers are unprepared to deal with the young black males. This is mainly why there is an overrepresentation of black children in special education. I think that teachers need to learn about other cultures to broaden their horizons as well.

Young black children (males especially) need to be view as potential contributors to society and not delinquents and detriments to society. Until that changes in society, then nothing will change in the school system, which is a microcosm of the society as a whole.

The topic is concerning black children...but it goes for Latino children as well.

Give thanks
