crime and cops: response to Ras Marcus

Most crime is caused by poverty, directly or indirectly. Crime by the poor is mostly a result of their material poverty, crime by the rich is mostly a result of their spiritual poverty that makes them so callous, greedy and grasping.
Of course the rich run the society so they define what is and what is not a "crime", so that the poor are defined as criminals while the wealthy carry out far more heinous criminal activities under the guise of "legitimate businesses." Similarly to how the U.S. bombing random people in Iraq or Afghanistan is defined as "war" or "collateral damage", while 9/11 or 7/7 are defined as "terrorism". A rose by any other name is still a rose.
Transforming the conditions of material and spiritual poverty that afflict people would get rid of most "crime". If you have enough food you have no need to steal from the next man's garden; if you are able to tap into the spiritual power within yourself you would feel no need to create a subsitiute for that sense of power by exerting power and force over others to make them do your will.
Also what is "crime"... obviously the more things a society defines as "criminal", the more "criminals" there will be. For eg. although I do not rob, steal, rape, assault or violate people's rights in other ways, I do consume cannabis on occasion, thus making me a "criminal". A woman with her face uncovered in some Islamic societies is considered a "criminal", while in western societies a woman with her breasts uncovered is considered a "criminal".
People will never fully agree on what is "right" or "wrong" conduct, "legal" or "illegal" conduct. I think the guideline for criminal behavior should be: behavior which infringes on the rights of others. (This does not only mean human beings alone even; I don't feel that people have the right to wipe out other species on this earth that have just as much right to exist here as we do).
So at the end of the day, each community can determine for themselves what is acceptable behavior in that community, and members of that community are free to frown on those who do not adhere to those standards- frown upon them, not invite them to parties and weddings, "blank" and ignore them, yell and preach at them or what have you. But UNLESS the behavior that is deemed unacceptale ACTUALLY INFRINGES ON SOMEONE ELSE'S RIGHTS, then the community should not go that step further and define the "abnormals" as "criminals". Otherwise you will end up with a rigid intolerant society that encourages only conformity and herd-instinct, and suppresses innovative thought.
Certain things any reasonable person in any society that I know of would agree at least in theory, that they should be considered crimes. Rape, child abuse, murder, unprovoked assault. I think people should consider these basic things to be what is defined as crime and not make a whole heap of laws trying to determine the way everyone lives their lives (which will never work anyway; has drug prohibition decreased the number of drug addicts?)
I think that in a society where wealth was evenly distributed among the people, where people felt they were valued members of the society and hence felt a sense of loyalty and dedication to the society, crime would be very minimal. Robbery etc. would be irrelevant since everyone would have what they needed. There would be better, more equitable relationships between the genders, and between adults and children, and so rape, spousal abuse, child abuse would largely disappear. Every next generation that is born into this type of society would absorb more of the positive traits encouraged by the society, and be less likely to retain the negative traits that would hold over from this type of society we in now.
I doubt there would ever be a society with no crime at all. Who knows though. But I think there would at least be the occasional murder committed by some jealous lover in the height of passion, and those kinds of things. But I think it would be much less prevalent than now, and you wouldn't need a professional police force to deal with it. The police as we know them are quite a recent invention in society, many cultures through time have got on fine without police (although you could argue that they had other organizations/social mechanisms that served a similar function to police).
Rather than having a professional police force, a just and equitable society could rely on a part-time "neighborhood watch" type of force that could be rotated among any able bodied young people who want to do it. These should be people who have the trust of the community- they could be elected to the position, or whatever mechanism you might use. The posts should be rotated so that no one becomes too entrenched in the idea of being a "cop" and starts to think of themselves as some elite group deserving of special privileges. (Power does tend to corrupt, so the more power is spread out among all members of a group, rather than concentrated amongst a few, the better.)
How this type of society could ever come about (and I have no expectation of seeing anything like it in my lifetime, not on a large scale anyway) is another matter for discussion. I don't see any reason why it can't be done though. (Other than that the people who have a vested interested in NOT seeing it done have a lot more brute force backing them up than we would like to see something like that happening.)
