Re: Who feels it knows it
In Response To: Who feels it knows it ()

Greetings.

I want to touch on something that I have found that may come to explain a little about why some white people who identify with Rastafari are not really playing their position in regards to African liberation within the context of the scheme of things. This works in tandem with white ones(due to privilege) thinking it is always a right to get involved with any and everything and re-make it in our own image.

I think that due to the economic situation, past and present there is a dependence on the white dollar and access to resources. On the macro level this can translate into the African liberation and self-determination goal to be watered down. So what happens sometimes is that the Rastafari people that white ones come in contact are expressing the kind of "one love" philosophy that many hippie-type white ones are attracted to(which can also be found in a lot of reggae music which is where many of us get our first taste of Rastafari ideas.) They latch onto this, make it their own and then feel justified in talking condescendingly to Rastafari people who still hold the African liberation element in high regard.

We can always then refer to those African brethren who told us it is all about "one love" as a justification for not delving deeper into the real issues of white privilege and African liberation and what that entails - indeed if some of us were confronted with the reality of these issues to begin with, many of us would have not even entered in the first place.

Bless.
