Effect comes from cause. Mugabe decided to take away the white commercial farmers land in order to improve his electoral chances(of course he also manipulates the votes to ensure he will win anyway) The reasons were twofold, destroy the economic power of the white farmers who were mostly mdc supporters while giving away their land to his supporters.

The effect of this has been the destruction of commercial farming, hence the need for food aid year after year since 2001. The economy was primarily agro based, once commercial agriculture was destroyed the economy imploded, more than 80% of workers are unemployed and more than 3 million zimbabweans(about 30% of the population) have been forced to relocate outside Zimbabwe.

There will be severe starvation within Zimbabwe this year, despite the best efforts of ngos and U.N. to feed the people.
