Re: Zimbabwe calls for return of white farmers

Brothers and sisters, let us be honest with our selves and avoid politricksters making a foolery of Ithiopian pride. I ( and I'm sure many other Zimbweans and South Africans) are getting tired of saying in our 'minds I told you so Mr President'. The news coming out of the governments official newspaper daily is so predictable - everyone knew such things would come to pass. The situation in Zimbabwe is so simple for those who have a direct interest and have followed events closely - be they Zimbabwean or non Zimbabwean (I'm not shocked by the 80% black South Africans who say Mugabe is ruling badly, becasue they have been following events closely and they have been directly negatively impacted by the developments in Zimbabwe as they are now desperately competing with Zimbabweans for jobs in South Africa - and crime has continued to increase.

The issue is not about black and white, it is about security of investment. The farms that were siezed were fully developed farms , with machinery and some had onsite factories to process the farm output and then deliver canned food to warehouses in the cities. When the farms were siezed, the factories, the cars , the furniture and the clothes were also siezed - contrary to international statements that were made suggesting that all developments were paid for.Interestingly, the Ministers and Mugabe's henchman helped themselves with the farms that had equipment and factories - some even taking over crop ready to be harvesting and reaping what they never sowed. After losing all this, and getting no real assurance of the security of your investment would you return to Zimbabwe and invest in farming again. There is simply no security in the investment. THis is even worse given the way the Mugabe's govt makes U-turn positions on policy. Tomorrow they can U-turn and tell you that all your investment belongs to the state. This is the reason why Zimbabweans in the diaspora have resorted to investing in residential properties in the cities rather than farming or any other business.

I believe there is a solution though: accountability. Let those who have made decisions be accountable. We can not be having turnarounds everyday - it shows confusion and speaks ill of a great Ithipian nation. And then blaming everything including our own statements and promises on Tony Blair and the British. When Mugabe proceeded with the land revolution in the manner he did, he made a decision to do so against other alternatives that were suggested as more sustainable. By the way almost 100% of Zimbabwean adults , including whites believed the land situation was unfair and had to be fixed, only that they disagreed with Mugabe's approach because it was seen as 'a pub fight' approach - strewn with regret the next day. Many alternatives were suggested - and Obasanjo played a key role inthe develpment of various solutions to the problem.

It is not only on the land issue and food situation when he makes u-turns again and again, he has made several u-turns on the IMF - declaring that he does not need them and he will not deal with them, only appraoching them 2 weeks later and begging them to consider Zimbabwe. This is shameful.

If he (Mugabe) has failed he has to be honourable enough to admit and give others a chance - we can no longer take mistakes and mistakes and mistakes and mistakes, because we the Zimbabweans are feeling it. As I am speaking over 5000 Zimbabweans whose businesses were closed last week for being informal - do not have an idea where tomorrows meal will come from. This is not simply about boardroom discussions and pride...this is about survival: The survival of Zimbabweans.

Ithiopian brothers and sisters we need to admit that our colleague has failed , the more we praise him is the more he beats he chest goes to big multinational assemblies and says these statements that he U-turns against only months later. Protecting a bad African leader can never bring respect to the Africans. Mugabe did well at one point for Zimbabwe, but the past seven years have been bad for him - and we have to judge him by what he is doing - probably age has taken over clear reason. Once Mugabe stops getting open support for his policies that are not working he will cease his interest in international assemblies and conferences and focus on the problems facing Zimbabwe. That is what the Zimbabweans want to see...an interested and concerned leader.
