Re: How do we fight this War?
In Response To: How do we fight this War? ()

We here, have suggested various books to encourage the development of a better world view, especially from an African Historical point of view. For a number of years we have loaned and given books to help expand awareness. This has expanded to assisting schools in developing their Social Studies Programs, which includes exposing children to African History at an early age.

On the adult level, many of the issues discussed on these sites take place in our communities. There are limitations to what we can do.

People who understand the big issues and are clear in the direction for improvements should look at expanding from this meeting place.

More people can share books and articles with people who do not have internet access. People can create websites that share information on their community/country, with the focus on involving more people locally. This allows people to be involved in their familiar settings. These websites can be linked to a common place for reasoning on bigger issues. They can start to look at the bigger picture through these interactions.

One of the important aspects that most don't consider, is people have to be prepared to sacrifice to build these types of media and outreach programs. The discussions on ways to improve have to be ongoing. It is never about one person solving things for everyone. It is what people are willing to co-operate to do that will make the difference.

Often what inhibits the ability to work and build in harmony is the ego tripping. Too many want to possess resources and direction. That shows deficiencies in their own life. Many hold on to the African focus until they can get better economic opportunities, then their true motivations are obvious. If people are not broadly focused, they cannot reach common ground to build with other Africans. For example: Through experience I have learned I cannot build with people who take the view that Haile Selassie is the supreme god for everyone, hence all others are wrong unless they come to their view about Haile Selassie. This also holds true for many with Christian beliefs. Most people will never agree on those things and I will not either. They can claim to follow but will not agree on the details. We can agree that people are quite entitled to their beliefs. Personal beliefs should not take away from facts that can address issues that are in our common interest.

Different people inspire people at different levels. Haile Selassie inspired many, so too other African personalities inspired others. People should not be made to feel that the personalities who inspired them to look deeper are irrelevant. Their preferred hero should not be forced on others as absolute. Africa is quite diverse. Diversity started in Africa. Africans have myriad of ways of engaging spirituality. Unless it can be shown that someone's preference is against the best interest of the collective, people should be willing to allow for the differences.

The common bonds of all Africans are far greater than the different interpretations of spirituality. The common objectives are greater, even over people's personal quest for fame, fortune and attention.

Within all these differences the only way forward is to build on character. If integrity is not the cornerstone of building, people will not be reasonable. They will not be able to understand 'complex' issues. They will not be able to co-operate without backbiting.

Principles can always be worked out through reasoning. Once the principles have been reasoned to understanding, people have to be prepared to act on the truths realized. Failing to act on truths realized leaves one a hypocrite. That is the quicksand that consumes efforts to build.
