Mugabe has had some 25 years, and you would have to be from another planet not to know that he has made a total mess of things. He did socialism and a horrendious list of Five-year developement plans. Then that went out of fashion, and he brought in first ESAP I, then ESAP II, then ZIMPREST, then something called Turn around. All unmitigated disasters, unless you do not consider the exodus of some 500000 specially skilled Zimbabweans ( one I know is at NASA, three are with Microsoft etc), the reduction of food producing peasants in to Oxfam style beggars, the reduction of cash-crop forex earning commercial farms to bleak wastelands, the rapid de-industrialisation of a country that could only recently be compared to some European nations, the introduction of laws to tighten control of the media, of association and assembly, unless you do not consider any of these a disaster.

Perhaps you would like to live in such a country?

Look at Kaunda. He conceded to the wishes of the people, after trying to stay on when they had had enough of him. Julius Nyerere tried his African Socialism, and was man enough to admit that it was not yielding what he had envisaged, and he stepped down. He died a man revered by all.

Mugabe however, is determined to cling on, even though we had had enough of him by 1990. We want him gone, let someone else have a go. If that someone fails, we will send him packing till it sinks in to the politicians heads that we only demand a certain calibre from them.

The time of cult personalities and hero worship is gone. Africa wishes to take her place in the world, not bow down in bondage to some megalomaniac and his kleptoctratic cronies.
